JON BON Jovi is about to get a taste of his own bad medicine in the form of upcoming rock star Joshua Kemp.

Many lunch-time sessions in the music classroom with teacher Dave St Henry certainly paid off for the 11-year-old when he won the national 2012 The Line - Rap4Respect rap competition in Hobart.

Josh's award-winning skills as a guitarist, song writer and composer won him and his father a trip to Hobart to attend a formal ceremony to receive his trophy.

The ceremony ran in conjunction with the formal NAIDOC Ball event on Friday night.

A boy of very few words, Josh only used one to describe his success in the music industry. "Awesome," he said. "My dad was stoked ... he said I did an awesome job."

The Morning Bulletin took part in a little jamming session with Josh outside his music class yesterday.

Mr St Henry said the school received an invitation to enter as part of the Australia-wide competition.

The criteria was to be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island descent and write an original rap song that spoke about respect.

With a bit of help from Mr St Henry, Josh struck all the right chords with his original composition Rap for Respect.

"He is definitely a star here at school and has the potential to go a long way."

As part of his win, Josh will have his song professionally recorded.

While he admitted the guitar tended to pluck his heart string, he didn't mind giving the drums a bash around either.

Josh listed Bon Jovi and Metallica as his influences.
