Trial told of bloody spade as man to face murder charge

A BLOODIED, rusted and broken shovel was discovered leaning against a shed at Coolum Caravan Park just metres from where fatally injured Jeremy Michael Baird was found.

Raymond Robert Millar is accused of using the shovel to murder the 41-year-old in broad daylight.

Thirteen witnesses gave evidence in a committal hearing yesterday.

Several told Maroochydore Magistrates Court that they saw blood coming from a cut on Mr Baird's head as he rocked back and forth like he was doing a "sit-up".

Mr Baird was taken to hospital where he remained for seven days before he died.

Witnesses told the court they saw Mr Baird sprawled on his back on a road on the afternoon of the incident.

Dugald Wishart said he saw Mr Millar drag a barely conscious Mr Baird several metres towards a grassed area beside the road exit.

"I saw the man on the ground being kicked quite hard in the back," he said.

Another witness, Alan Bishop, told how he helped Mr Millar move Mr Baird from the road to a grassed area near a gated park exit to David Low Way.

Mr Bishop told the court he thought Mr Baird was drunk and helped stand him up with the support of Mr Millar.

He said he could see Mr Baird's head wounds, describing them as "congealed cuts".

More than 200 photographs were taken at the scene during investigations and some were shown to witnesses in yesterday's committal hearing.

Mr Millar had been a resident of the Coolum Caravan Park for 11 years.

Dean McGrath told the court he heard Mr Millar accusing Mr Baird of stealing money.

Peter Jones, who gave evidence via telephone, said he heard Mr Millar saying he wanted Mr Baird out of his caravan.

Police told the court they found only a shovel head, splattered with blood at the scene.

Mr Millar was committed to stand trial in the Brisbane Supreme Court on murder, grievous bodily harm and drug charges.
