A SEVERE storm warning for the Sunshine Coast has been cancelled, although the region has been hit by thunder, heavy rain and strong winds.

Forecasters earlier were concerned about the possibility of wind gusts of up to 100kmh, strong enough to bring down large trees and powerlines.

The storm has since moved out to sea.

Rainfalls of up to 30mm may continue through the afternoon and into the evening.
