NAMBOUR Selangor Private Hospital's first dedicated rehabilitation unit has been unveiled.

The $1 million, 16-bed, state-of-the-art unit will offer a full range of inpatient rehabilitation programs.

These include services for people recovering from a stroke, an accident, major or minor surgery or any condition where there is a need to improve tolerance, strength, pain relief or functional ability.

The development took three months to complete.

The unit has been decked out with large private rooms with ensuites and balconies, a spacious lounge and patient dining area, a well-equipped gym looking out on to bush surroundings together with access to outdoor areas.

Nurse unit manager Anna Krzysica said there had been big demand for rehabilitation in the Nambour area.

"Some have been waiting one to two weeks and going to Cooroy or Buderim, but it's a bit far from the local area," she said.

"The beauty now is that there will be a Nambour-based centre for private patients."

Ms Krzysica said many patients would be in for orthopaedic reasons

"It means they can have surgery in hospital and then rehab here," she said.

"It means doctors doing surgery will be around for the entire admission.

"We've already had a lot of comments here from those who are grateful for that."

She said in the future, the unit would look at opening day rehabilitation programs for those living at home who needed extra exercise programs to achieve their goals.

Hospital CEO Shane Mitchell said the rehabilitation unit's aim was to promote the early return to independent living at the highest possible level of functioning.

"We are very pleased to be able to offer rehabilitation services to patients of the Sunshine Coast," he said.

"Our aim is to provide an early return to independent living at the highest possible level of functioning," he said.

The medical team includes geriatricians Drs Vanessa Harrington, John Endacott and Tony Tampiyappa.

Heading the team is Dr Peter Georgius, who has experience in musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation.
