UPDATE 6.25PM: There are conflicting reports a man believed to have been bitten by a small shark may have been stung by a stingray barb instead.

A Department of Community Safety spokesman told The Daily at 6.20pm there were conflicting reports.

A spokesman for Surf Life Saving said they had no reports of either incident.

The 20-year-old male victim was taken to Seven Day Maroochydore Medical Centre in a stable condition.

The medical centre refused to comment on the situation.

Man bitten by shark off Mooloolaba Beach

A DIP in the ocean ended with a trip to the doctors this afternoon for a young man who was nipped on the foot by what was believed to be a shark.

A Department of Community Safety spokesman said a 20-year-old man was bitten on the left ankle by what was believed to be a small shark off Mooloolaba Beach about 2.50pm today.

"He sustained only a puncture wound," the spokesman said.

"He was taken to the Seven Day Maroochydore Medical Centre in a stable condition."

A spokesman for Surf Life Saving said they had no reports of the incident.

In September, local fisherman Tony Parker reported an alarming number of sharks off Mooloolaba Beach.

At the time he had caught six sharks in two days.

He kept two measuring between 50 and 60 cms.
