It’s mackerel tuna jacks

THERE are some good fish around at the moment, with a variety of species caught.

For the offshore anglers, slow-trolled, hard-bodied lures and chin-rigged baits have been the go for mackerel as they are well spread. Try places like Murphy's Reef for these speedy fish.

Another species on the chew at the moment is tuna. Mactuna and longtail tuna are all on the feed and are normally in close range of the river mouth. Metal slices and soft plastics are very effective on these ferocious feeders and often it's just a matter of letting your lure sink beneath the school and you're on!

On the beaches, North Shore and Mudjimba beaches have been fishing well this week with whiting in big numbers in the shallow gutters. Remember to keep your offerings nice and light as to make your bait as natural looking as possible. Often, dart and other aggressive feeders will actually eat your bait on the way down to the bottom.

For the river anglers, mangrove jacks have been extremely active, with many anglers tangling with the odd "jack" or two. One such place that seems to be covered with jacks is Dunethin Rock. Elsewhere in the river, big whiting up to a whopping 45cm are being taken on surface lures around the Black Banks area, with a Bassday Sugapen once again proving to be the most popular style.
