THE Queensland Firebirds kept their finals hopes alive and ensured the NSW Swifts remained winless in Brisbane yesterday.
The Firebirds, the defending trans-Tasman champion, moved into the top-four for the first time this season after winning the round 10 clash 50-45.
The defeat means the Swifts are yet to win a game in Brisbane at four attempts.
It was the fifth consecutive win for the Queenslanders, and the Swifts, on their own six-match winning streak, made them work hard for it.
Just one goal separated the teams at the end of the first three quarters before the Queenslanders stepped up a gear in the fourth.
Jamaican sharpshooter Romelda Aiken led the way with 38 goals from 43 attempts, while Natalie Medhurst chipped in with 12 goals from 20 shots.
Susan Pratley (29/33) and Amorette Wild (9/12) were the best for the visitors.
Aiken said it had been a real battle all over the court.
"It was so intense because both teams were desperate for the win, but I guess we just wanted it more on the day," she said. "We are really happy with the result and hope we can continue this form for the rest of the season."
The Firebirds head to Adelaide on Sunday to take on the Thunderbirds.
