Dream home rises up in Maleny
MALENY residents Robert and Anne Hadley were the perfect candidates for ABC1's program Dream Build after stumbling across a block overlooking the Glass House Mountains and building their dream.
The TV series is based around Aussies who have turned their housing dreams into a reality, and opens the door to some of Australia's most cutting edge homes.
Mr and Mrs Hadley will appear on the program on Sunday alongside their internationally inspired and locally built Maleny House.
Over the 16 months the house took to rise out of the ground, Mr and Mrs Hadley were living in Romania and were only able to visit the site twice.
Their tight-knit long distance relationship with Maleny builder Nathan Quail and architects Steve Guthrie and Lindy Atkin ensured the finished product was just as the couple requested in 2006.
"Over the period of planning we got to know everyone involved, and we became friends with them and trusted them," Mr Hadley said.
"We didn't have any apprehension about them building while we weren't here.
"Over the internet we formed a great relationship with them and shared our thoughts about the process."
Maleny House, completed in December, 2009, is inspired by homes the couple have lived in throughout the world.
"We thought about what we liked living in places such as Singapore, Amsterdam and Romania," Mrs Hadley said.
"We took little bits and pieces out of each house and added what we liked.
"We also have a big interest in Zen gardens and Japanese design, so that's incorporated a lot too."
Now enjoying living in their dream home, the Hadleys are looking forward to exploring the local area.
"I have to pinch myself sometimes - it's all so amazing," Mrs Hadley said.
