AS SOON as you meet the woman who is the driving force behind Rockhampton's Dusty Springfield production, it's almost as if you can envisage the final project in its entirety.

A storyteller at heart, former Rocky girl Karen Crone has returned home for the past eight weeks to direct a musical that she relates to on many levels.

"I didn't know much about Dusty before this but there are so many things we have in common that I can relate to," Karen said yesterday on the stage of the Pilbeam Theatre.

Karen said Rockhampton's performing arts sector was rich with talent.

"There's something about Central Queensland and I don't know what it is but we just have so many great performers here," she said.

"There are so many things about coming home - the smells, the sunsets, the crazy memories.

"But I believe this production is the same calibre as an international show," Karen said.

Being part of many productions, films and arts programs throughout the country during her career, Karen's experience covers many areas of the arts, however, her heart belongs to the stage.

"This is what I love, I love telling stories. I'm known as a storyteller, and not just through dance but also the spoken word," she said.

"The life of a performer is so different; you live at night, you're in here (a theatre) and the only way you know what time it is if you've got your watch on and that's another thing I relate to with Dusty, that was her life," Karen said.
