Classic cars pushed to their limits in Noosa hill climb

QUEENSLAND'S fastest hillclimb cars and drivers will be at Tewantin this Saturday and Sunday for Australia's toughest hillclimb, Historic Noosa "The Hill".

The event is being jointly run by the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club and the Historic Racing Car Club of Queensland and spectators are welcome.

Twenty eight local drivers will be out to try to humble the drivers coming from Brisbane, south-east Queensland and NSW with a special contest for the fastest time up the hill for current and past state title holders who are making the trip to the Sunshine Coast.

More than 160 cars are contesting the very challenging 1.5km course including open-wheel race cars, modern high performance cars and a variety of classic sedans and sports cars. Of special note this year is the high number of open-wheel cars, a record entry at the track with the alcohol fuelled Formula 5000 Bowen-Hay of David Cross providing competition for the turbo-Rotary Van Dieman RF92 of Warwick Hutchinson.

Malcolm Oastler, now retired from Formula One Technical Director duties will be driving his Ferrabusa 156 (Formula Libre) and Ron Hay will give his unique V8 powered Dallara Formula 3 a run up the hill after competing in the Australian Hillclimb Championship at Bathurst last weekend.

The 2.4 litre V8 engine, hand built in New Zealand and based on the 1200 Kawasaki engine, produces almost 400 BHP at an incredible 11500 rpm.

As well you can expect to see the 1936 Ford V8 special, several Mustangs, Austin Healeys, Jaguars and Toranas fight for a position in their class. The pit area is open to spectators.

Gates open at 8am. Entry is by shuttle bus (parking at Tewantin Sports Reserve) or from the lower end of Gyndier Dr and entry is $15 day pass for adults (weekend $20), and accompanied children under 14 free.
