NOT every business owner will go the extra mile to help a customer.

But Montville Village News owners Alan and Norelle Weight are two retailers who make every customer feel well looked after.

The duo were recently honoured with a Carer Friendly Business Award for great service and commendation after they were nominated by a loyal customer.

"I felt very humble," Mrs Weight said.

"I said to the lady who rang us 'we were only doing our job, doing what we're supposed to do as retailers we didn't do anything exceptional', we just helped a customer who needed that little bit extra.

"It's nice when people acknowledge that extra little bit of something you give."

The Carer Friendly Business Awards were established to recognise businesses in the community that notice the difficulties carers have accessing products and services due to their caring role and make a special effort to help make a carer's life easier.

Carers Queensland Sunshine Coast team leader Kath Kelly said it was important to honour businesses that took on that role.

"A carer's life can be tough and day to day activities, like shopping and maintaining a job, can sometimes be difficult to do," Ms Kelly said.

"The awards are a way for carers to recognise businesses that provide exceptional service and flexible working conditions to unpaid family carers."

Mrs Weight said they had owned the newsagency for just over two years and did their best to meet the needs of every customer they served.

"I always maintain if you are the person you appear to be, people know you're not an act," she said.
